About
The planning for UCF’s Burnett Honors College (BHC) building began in 2000 following a $1.5 million donation from Al and Nancy Burnett, which was matched by the State for a total of $3 million. Groundbreaking occurred in April 2001, and the building was dedicated in October 2002. It was designed by founding dean, Dr. Allyn Stearman, to serve as an academic and social hub for UCF’s Honors Scholars. A notable feature in the design was its walled garden, funded with an additional $60,000 secured by then-provost Dr. Gary Whitehouse.
The BHC Meditation Garden provides a tranquil outdoor retreat for the campus community. The garden features native flora and blends various cultural influences in its design and plant selection. It is a dynamic space that evolves with nature while offering beauty and reflection.
Over the years, the garden's botanical diversity and health declined. After returning to the UCF area in 2023, Dr. Stearman volunteered to rehabilitate the garden. Working alongside UCF students, BHC Scholars, and volunteers, the garden was revitalized and returned to her original vision. The garden is now regularly maintained by Dr. Stearman and her team.
The Meditation Garden was dedicated to Dr. Stearman in appreciation for all she has done, and continues to do, for UCF and the BHC.
Koi Pond
One of the most popular features of the Meditation Garden is our koi pond. Added to the garden by the BHC's second dean, Dr. Alvin Wang, the pond is an additional element of serenity and beauty. The pond was dedicated to Dr. Wang in appreciation for his contributions to the BHC.
The pond is maintained by Healthy Ponds. More information about their services can be found here.
