BHC Welcome Letter: Fall 2019
Dear Students, Family, and Friends of the Burnett Honors College:
On behalf of the Burnett Honors College community, I am delighted to welcome you to an exciting new school year! I’d like to take a few moments to update you on our incoming class and reflect on the strides we have made in the last year.
Some of the more notable highlights this year include welcoming a class of 517 freshmen from 31 states, who speak 29 different languages, and have an average SAT of 1465. We have the largest number of National Merit and National Hispanic Scholars that we’ve ever had on campus. We also welcomed our first class of sophomore scholars. For the fall 2019 semester, BHC is “home” to approximately 2,260 accomplished and active honors students.
This past year, we have enhanced our commitment to nurture and build the uniquely qualified talent network that is essential to the workforce in Central Florida and beyond. We are moving the needle by being at the forefront of innovation, community engagement and partnerships. In the spring of 2019, for example, we launched the BHC Networking Internship Breakfast, which provided opportunities for BHC Scholars to meet with prominent local firms in a small group environment and discuss opportunities for internships and full-time careers. Through our inaugural Business Leaders Luncheon, sponsored by Akerman LLP, we were able to introduce 50 prominent business leaders to the distinctive pool of talent that exists in our college and create pathways for future collaborations.
Every day, we strive to serve as a launchpad for students to explore, discover and engage with the world around them. BHC Scholars are provided the opportunities to grow intellectually and apply their knowledge to some of society’s most challenging issues. In that vein, we have developed programs to support students and broaden their educational choices. In partnership with the UCF College of Graduate Studies, we are encouraging students to expand exploration into graduate education and providing scholarships to those who need the funds to do so. Whether it is through research, internships, study abroad opportunities or accelerated graduate programs, our students are encouraged to push their boundaries further than anything they thought possible.
If you haven’t visited us recently, stop by and check out the exciting changes around the Burnett Honors College building. Our Reading Room received a furniture refresh, which provides students with more inviting seating to work on homework, relax and socialize between classes. The lobby also received an update, featuring new couches to make students and visitors feel more comfortable. Additionally, in support of UCF sustainability initiatives, a water bottle filling station was added to the water fountains in the main corridor. Since its completion in the fall of 2018, we have already kept approximately 20,000 single-use bottles from entering the environment. The refresh was made possible with the assistance of Addition Financial, a longstanding friend of the BHC.
Over the course of the last year, we set the stage for prominence and innovation in ways that higher education and society cannot yet imagine. From contemporary furniture to new initiatives that push the envelope, we are growing and expanding to make sure that every BHC Scholar has access to the widest range of possibilities. With goals of impact, diversity, and access, we are seeking to ensure the success of every student that passes through the halls of BHC. As we progress into this new school year, we are supporting the health and well-being of our Scholars through various intellectual and social activities. Our event kick-off was on Friday, September 13th with our Deans’ Welcome, Frito Pie Friday, but we also have a full calendar of other activities to get our students connected and involved. To stay up to date with all our upcoming events, follow us on our Instagram and Facebook.
Together we will continue our mission of “Cultivating Talent. Inspiring Excellence.”
Go Knights! Charge On!
