One of the cornerstones of the Office of Research and Civic Engagement is to encourage our students to present and publish their research topics, whether it is independent research or conducted as part of the Honors in the Major and/or SMART research programs. Below is a listing of the presentations and publications of some of our SMART students. If you are an HIM or SMART student who would like to have your presentation/publication list appear on this website, please e-mail your list to honorsresearch@mail.uf.edu. Keep up the great work!
SMART Accomplishments
Stephanie Colombo
Major: Psychology
SMART Mentor: Dr. David Bowie, Department of English
Marianna Chao, Dr. David Bowie, and I presented our data to the American Dialect Society in Anaheim California January 4, 2007. The research looked at consonantal changes in a population of Wasatch Front speakers from Salt Lake City, Utah. Ten of the speakers from the recordings of the Semiannual Religious addresses of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints between the years 1940 through 2000 were looked at for r-lessness, word final t/d deletion, intermedial /nt/, and aspirated /w/
over time. It was found that speakers are much more variable in their speech than most linguists assume in their samples, so the work is beneficial to the future of linguistic research.
Jennie Zillner
Major: Political Science
SMART Mentor: Dr. Houman Sadri, Department of Political Science
Beginning in the Summer C 2006 session and continuing today, I have been the
research assistant for Dr. Houman A. Sadri, Professor of International Relations in the Political Science Department at UCF. I have been taking part in research for a book in which Dr. Sadri is co-authoring. The ongoing research project is for an interdisciplinary book discussing intercultural and international relations, which is scheduled to be published next year. I am continuing my research in this area this semester for the SMART program in which I am studying “the Effects of Intercultural Communication on International Relations and our Global Community.”
